5th Grade Self Portraits (part 1)

Our 5th grade students have been learning about self portraits in art.  They viewed and discuss paintings done by some of the world's greatest artist to see how they choose to represent themselves with art.  They learned how the body has some basic proportions and how to measure and draw these.  Next, the classes discussed how a person's personality can be viewed in a self portrait.  So they wrote on the shirt and hair of their drawings positive words that described themselves.  Then, the class went around with colored markers and wrote positive words about each other.  This was the first part of our final project.  Next, the students will create a final self portrait painting from a photograph of themselves where they try to portray more about themselves than just their physical appearance.
